Devin Thomas | Custom 9" Damascus Clad Gyuto
Devin Thomas | Custom 9" Damascus Clad Gyuto
One-of-one. Devin Thomas has been forging Damascus since 1986 and produced the first stainless Damascus of its kind in 1991 — his patterns have been copied for decades but never matched. This 9" Gyuto pairs his Damascus, clad over a MagnaMax core, with a curly mango handle grown to look like it's still moving.

Description
Description
Devin Thomas has been making knives since he was a teenager, and making Damascus since 1986 — long enough to have shaped what American Damascus looks like today. In 1991 he produced one of the first stainless Damascus steels ever made, at a time when the idea barely existed in the kitchen knife world. His patterns, with names like Spirograph and Dot Matrix, became so recognizable they've been imitated for years. Today, working out of Panaca, Nevada, his focus has shifted almost entirely to kitchen knives for chefs and serious home cooks — thin edges, precise heat treatment, and Damascus that performs as well as it looks. His son, metallurgist Larrin Thomas, developed CPM MagnaCut — the same steel family behind the core of this very blade.
This 9" Gyuto carries Thomas's Damascus cladding over a MagnaMax core — a high-performance steel developed for serious edge retention and toughness, wrapped in a pattern that moves like water down the blade. The handle is curly mango, its grain rippling with the same restless energy as the steel it's paired with.
Sourced directly from Thomas by our custom knife buying team at Blade Show 2026, this Gyuto is a rare chance to own a piece from one of the most influential names in modern Damascus.

Use & Care
Use & Care
This is a one-of-one piece from an independent custom maker, built with materials that deserve a little extra attention.
- Hand wash only. Wash by hand with warm water and mild soap immediately after use, then dry completely before storing. Never put this knife in the dishwasher.
- The MagnaMax core offers strong corrosion resistance, but the Damascus cladding should still be dried fully after every use to preserve its pattern and finish over time. A light coat of mineral oil or knife oil is recommended if the knife won't be used for a while.
- The curly mango handle is a natural wood material. Avoid prolonged soaking or exposure to extreme heat, which can cause the wood to dry out or crack over time. An occasional light coat of food-safe mineral oil will help maintain its finish.
- Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, ideally in a sheath or blade guard if one is included.
