Long before New West KnifeWorks was known for the finest blades in the world, Corey Milligan was showing knives in juried fine art shows — knives judged as art first, tools second. Maker's Etch is a return to that instinct. It's the space where our makers set aside the production line and experiment: new materials, new color combinations, new ideas. Every month brings something different. This one won't come again.
The handle is resin-stabilized burl wood, hand-selected and finished by our makers — teal and green burl warmed by streaks of gold and amber, like dawn breaking over the Tetons. No two pieces of burl are alike, so no two handles are either. Stabilizing isn't just for beauty: the wood is vacuum-infused with resin and heat-cured, making the handle harder, more water-resistant, and durable enough for daily use, not just display.
Beneath the color and grain, this is still the knife it has always been. The blade is CPM S35VN particle metallurgy steel — the same super steel U.S. Special Forces trust for their field knives — ground and hand-finished at our factory in Victor, Idaho, in the shadow of the Teton Range. Hand-sharpened before it ever leaves our shop, because that's the one step no machine has ever matched.
This is not a display piece. It is a working knife built from materials that happen to be beautiful — the New West KnifeWorks definition of functional art. Use it every day. Pass it down.
