Forged in Snow
What started as a slightly crazy idea turned into one of the most rewarding weeks we’ve ever shared as a team.
This winter, New West KnifeWorks entered the Snowscapes snow sculpture competition in Driggs—and we’re thrilled to say we walked away with both People’s Choice and 1st Place Overall.
- More than 1,200 public votes.
- Twenty-nine teammates.
- Countless cold, late nights.
- One unforgettable sculpture.
Meet Beauregard Slim
Our sculpture, Beauregard Slim, brought together everything we love: storytelling, craftsmanship, and a little bit of madness. A bison forged from snow and ice, standing powerful and resolute beside a working forge, Beauregard Slim felt like a natural extension of who we are—rooted in the West, shaped by hard work, and unapologetically bold.
Seeing this idea come to life over the course of the week was nothing short of electric.
A True Team Effort
Twenty-nine members of our team contributed their time, skills, and problem-solving chops to make this sculpture happen. Watching so many people apply their talents in a completely new medium—and support each other through trial, error, and frozen fingers—was inspiring in every sense of the word.
We’re constantly blown away by the creativity and grit of the people around us. Snowscapes was a reminder that when this team gets together, there’s very little we can’t figure out.
Mentorship That Made the Difference
A special thank-you goes to Mike Haroldson and Diane Haroldson, our mentors who traveled seven hours from southeastern Wyoming to work alongside us.
Their positivity, patience, and steady encouragement helped every one of us feel more confident tackling something completely unfamiliar. Learning from their deep experience—and their impressive tool collection—was a true gift.
Pushing the Craft Forward
Several individuals helped elevate Beauregard Slim to the next level:
- Erin Hemmings set the tone early with a 3D model that quickly became the talk of the snow sculpting community. The ice-sculpted bison horns he created were a defining feature of the final piece.
- Lori Solem guided the sculpture from early conceptual sketches all the way through the final touches of bison fur. Her enthusiasm helped push us to sign up in the first place—and her dedication through long, cold evenings brought Beauregard Slim fully to life.
The Results
We’re honored—and still a little stunned—to have earned:
- People’s Choice Award (based on over 1,200 public votes)
- 1st Place Overall at Snowscapes 2026
But more than the awards, this week was about collaboration, learning, and doing something completely outside our comfort zone—together.
